How to Read Good Sam Directory Ratings

The three-number rating that accompanies each campground listing in the directory gives readers an at-a-glance assessment of a campground's amenities, cleanliness and environment.

How to read the Good Sam Rating 10/10 /10.
All three ratings categories are measured on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.Less than 1 percent of parks or campgrounds receive the coveted 10 / 10 / 10 rating, which indicates superior facilities that are well maintained, clean, well-appointed restrooms and a highly appealing appearance.Campgrounds are inspected annually by dedicated RVers like you.

Completeness of facilities

10 / 10 / 10
The first campground rating evaluates completeness and quality of facilities. In this category we rate interior roads, sites, registration area, hookups, recreation, swimming, security, laundry, store and building maintenance.

Cleanliness and physical characteristics of restrooms and showers

10 / 10 / 10
The second rating category concerns the cleanliness and physical characteristics of toilets, walls, showers, sinks/counters/mirrors and floor. If a park achieves a full point in each of the above, it receives a star (), indicating exceptionally clean restrooms.

Also rated are physical characteristics of restrooms, including interior construction, adequate supplies/odor free, adequate number of facilities, exterior appearance and location in relation to park spaces, and interior appearance.

Visual Appeal and Environmental Quality

10 / 10 / 10

This category addresses the park's setting and site layout, function and identification of signage, overall exterior building maintenance, noise, trash disposal, litter and debris around the grounds and sites, and appearance of grounds, sites and entrance area.

Our Family Tent Camped during Memorial weekend 2016. We made the best out of the vacation but not sure we would return to this KOA unless they fixed some items/issues that we stated below. Below is our opinion of the KOA in St. Mary’s/North Jacksonville and what we experienced/saw. We camped with our 3yr old, large dog and 2 adults. In our opinion this is not a KOA but borderline RV Park with a bunch of drunks at night. If you do RV camp here you will have a better time we believe vs tent camping. We did talk with another person who stated she has been going to this KOA for 5 yrs (Tent camping & RV)and she said it has went downhill and she will be looking for someplace else to camp. They no longer do hay rides for the kids (Or didn’t during our stay) and are not focused on the kids anymore but more the long term resistance. The price for Tent Camping was too high for what they provided and the look of the KOA. Most KOA’s that are not near in demand locations are $20 not $35. Below is our pros, cons & suggestions.
Pros:
Pool was clean and maintained.
Playground was clean no bugs in sand.
Bounce Pad was new and fun for our child (Would be used more if it was closer to the pool and playground)
During the pirate event, one staff member tried to make kids have fun and did a great job.
The store had lots of camping items and food items for reasonable prices.
The ice was pricey but we compared it to the local gas station and they were only 25 -50 cents more but its onsite you don’t have to leave.

Cons:
Staff does cater to the long term resistance and will stop by and see them at all hours of the day but never check on other campers and see if they need anything or are having a good time. And at night we heard a big party at the site near us till 1am in the morning only to find staff members were there with them drinking heavily. As one reviewer said if you call the number to report something you can hear that they are at the party so it’s useless. So much for quite time 10pm.
Playground was small with little for the kids to do only a small swing and slide.
Site R-1 is at the end of a road heading to all the campsites so at night the lights from the cars and golf carts shine into your site & tent.
Trash cans around the campground weren’t emptied very much if at all during our stay. We found in the dog area our dog trash bag that we placed into the trash was still there during our stay and never emptied.
Bathrooms were dated and dirty during most of our stay. We found cigarette butts in the shower with other junk. Who smokes while showering? Toilet seats were worn and the toilets wobbled side to side (Not all of them). The women’s restroom the light cover that had fallen out they did fix it 2 days later. During the day when we used the women’s restroom someone was smoking while using the toilet. This gives you a good view of the onsite people.
Dog park was nice for our dog to get free for a few minutes but at entrance to gate it had an electrical box that was broken with exposed wiring (You could get hurt if it rained).
Roads are in poor condition but are fine if you are careful walking and no worse than a state park.
During our stay the electric at around 7pm turned off. The Staff was tiring to figure out why it turned off and kept tripping the main breaker for the row A plus the Tent sites R1 – R4. It did get turned back on around 11pm but we had our daughter trying to sleep with no fans. The staff did let us know what was going on but never said they would rectify the situation since we paid for electric and didn’t have it.
We camped in R1. When we arrived the fire ring had cigarette butts in it and looks as it was not cleaned. The site was level but all dirt no grass. They did just cut pine trees and looks as they are going to expand the sites so with that said there is tree sap all over the camp sites but you are camping so this is not a con just be aware.
We arrived and setup camp and had our nice setup with our electrical and hose’s for our cleaning station and fans. Then the staff placed one of their friends in the freshly cut area that has no electric or water about 50ft from R1. We heard them tell the friend while he was setting up that if he needs water just to use our water. And during our stay when we would leave he would use our hose and just leave it on the ground (Caught him multiple times) instead of attached to our wash bucket, now it is leaking for some reason and that hose was a $40 hose not cheap junk. This is our stuff that we bring and other get to use it not what we are used to and wonder what else was used while we were gone. The bad part about this was that this person was a friend of the KOA that was catered to at all hours of the day.

Suggestions:
They need a mega phone for events so the staff can talk to everyone during the events and everyone can hear them.
They should go around before the events and stop at the sites to let everyone know the events are starting so they get more kids involved.
Give the bathrooms a makeover
Upgrade the playground for more things for the kids.
Clean the campground better especially when someone checks out like they do at state parks so the place stays clean.
Paint the buildings and make them look better.
Offer more events for the kids during the weekends.
Staff needs to cleanup better with better clothing not torn and dirty shirts (Mainly the workers).
Give the roads a makeover with better lines or reflectors so the vehicles know where to turn.
Adjust your prices so more people would tent camp.

First stop on our trip to the N.E. for the summer. It's a Saturday night leading into Father's day and this place is just fine. Lead to our site, C14, which is level and all utilities work properly. Yes, we are in a sea of RV motorhomes, but that is how the majority of people travel now. Cable T.V. was wanting for selection, but worked ok. WiFi was adequate. Both ATT and Verizon voice and data excellent. There is a small carry out/site delivery dinner menu. Ours worked out to be about $12/plate. Not bad for not having to cook tonight. Bath rooms are clean. We did not use them, but would have, had we were not been self contained. KOA personnel were great. The entry road could use some work (you could bath a baby in some of the pot holes.) Enjoyed our stay. Thanks for being here!

Great place for families to stay. Many things for kids to do. We were in the back part of the campground and heard no noise from the interstate. Only negative would be if it was raining, dirt sites. It did not rain while we were there so had no problems.

its one of our stops to and from our winter stay in the south. They have the best waffles. The roads need a bit of care but with all the rain most camp grounds have some damage this year. the staff as always were helpful and on the ball the camp ground filled up for the night and they have a Tepee in the woods that some of the staff, kids help build. it was fun to watch them put it together.

Our family had a gathering here with 35 of us and we could not say enough good things about our stay, the staff was amazing and we enjoyed our entire stay, our group utilized 2 cabins, a tent site and a trailer site, the fun started the moment we arrived. Thank you for a great site to visit. We will be back.

Overnight stop traveling from Florida to Pennsylvania. Appreciated the trees and rural feeling of the campground. The negative for me was the road noise from 95. I would stay here again.
