Newport Beach, California

  Newport Beach is located along the central coast of Orange County, California. It is known as one of the wealthiest communities in the state and country with a median home value exceeding $1 million. has recently rated Newport Beach as the richest city in the United States.

The city was first established in 1871 as a trading port for ranchers with trade steamers coming and going with cargo. It was named Newport by those same ranchers who became the driving force during the development of the city. In 1905, the Pacific Electric Railroad established a line that connected Newport with Los Angeles and development of the area increased rapidly. The city of Newport Beach was incorporated in 1906 and has continued to expand though annexation of surrounding communities, the last of which occurred in 2008.

Newport Harbor was formed in the early 1900s when the surrounding estuary was dredged deeply enough to handle large ships. The dredging led to the creation of several small artificial islands including Balboa Island, Harbor Island and Lido Island. All of which have become populated with lavish homes, many with their own private docking facilities.

The harbor was once the home of several maritime industries that included boat and ship building and commercial fishing. It is now one of the largest recreational boating harbors on the west coast.
