Chincoteague, Virginia

  By Ron Souza

The Island of Chincoteague is connected to mainland Virginia by a scenic causeway. As you drive across the picturesque span, it becomes quite obvious why artists from around the world are drawn to the charm and beauty of this very unique region.

Honorary mascots of the city are the Chincoteague ponies, a herd of small wild horses found no where else in the US. A special time of year to plan your stay at a Good Sam Club RV Park, with excellent Camping Discounts for members, would be in July when the townspeople catch and escort some of the ponies across the channel for a benefit auction and a very popular, city carnival, an 85 year old tradition in Chincoteague.

For many townspeople as well as visitors, the island is a fun filled, family recreation area with great sport fishing, skate parks, miniature golf, boating and kayaking. While for many others it is a relaxing location with charming boutiques, outstanding antiques shops, excellent museums, nighttime entertainment and very fine dining.

The region’s expansive nature preserve is an attraction you will find both interesting and alluring. RV Travel to Chincoteague will place you in close proximity to miles and miles of unspoiled Atlantic coastline with acres of wetlands, rare species of wildflowers and a host of both sea and land creatures. Keep your eyes peeled as this is a native habitat for the American Bald Eagle.

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge spans 14,000 acres and features miles of pristine terrain with woodland trails and beach roads that will enable you to view hundreds of species of animals, migratory birds, and even the Chincoteague wild ponies.

Assateague Island National Seashore can be found on the ocean side of the National Wildlife Refuge. It is an outstanding site for all types of water activities. You can fish from the beach, swim in the cool, blue Atlantic or just lie on the soft sand and soak up the sun. You might even see pods of dolphin frolicking in the surf just off shore while horseshoe crabs scamper back and forth along the sand.

When looking for a unique and very desirable destination for your next get-a-way, RV Travel to Chincoteague may be just the right choice for you.
